The turned wood body is covered in layers of Rajasthani lacquer in red, green, gold, and deep blue — colours that have aged together over a century into something that looks less like paint and more like geology. A band of bone inlay tiles wraps around the widest point of the body, held in place by engraved brass bands above and below. The candle cup at the top carries a pierced brass collar with floral cutwork. The base is ringed with applied brass floral bosses. Three rubber feet on the bottom were added at some point by someone who wanted to protect a surface — a practical addition to a very impractical object, in the best possible way.

Rajasthani lacquerwork on turned wood — known locally as lac work — is one of the oldest decorative traditions of North India, particularly associated with Jaipur and Jodhpur. The combination of multicolour lac, bone inlay, and brass fittings on a single piece is characteristic of high-quality work from the late 19th to early 20th century. This is not a tourist souvenir. This is the real thing.

Origin: Rajasthan, India

Period: c.1880–1920

Material: Turned wood with multicolour lacquer, bone inlay, and brass fittings

Dimensions: 25.5 × 10 cm

Weight: 480 grams

Condition: Good antique — patina and wear consistent with age

WARNING: This candlestick has been holding candles since approximately 1900.
