A small miracle in a world where we cannot even find two matching socks. These Chikaramachi breakfast plates have stayed together, dressed in flowers, and are now ready to make your toast look considerably more organised than the rest of your morning.

Dating to around 1930, this Japanese set has creamy borders, colourful floral bouquets and gently shaped rims. Pink and purple blooms mingle with little yellow flowers and green foliage, leaving the white centres free for breakfast. Very thoughtful. Nobody wants to spend the morning trying to distinguish a painted flower from an actual raisin.

The matching service bears the Chikaramachi, Hand Painted mark, photographed here. Its circa-1930 date places these plates in the interwar years. We love bringing tableware from that period into a modern kitchen: a little connection to another time, without having to give up the electric kettle or pretend we enjoy getting up early.

At 18.5 cm across, they make a lovely coordinated set for breakfast or afternoon cake. Put all six out for company, or rotate through them yourself and enjoy feeling unusually well supplied with pretty plates. That counts as being prepared, surely.

Maker's mark on the matching service: Chikaramachi, Hand Painted

Origin: Japan

Date: circa 1930

Includes: six breakfast plates

Diameter: 18.5 cm each

Combined weight: 1,410 g

Cream borders with floral bouquets and shaped rims

Sold together as one complete set of six, not individually

This listing includes the six breakfast plates only.
