Six plates for the people who suddenly appear when they hear there is cake. This Chikaramachi set has thought through the logistics, although it has made no provision for the person who insists on “just a tiny slice” and then returns three times.

Dating to around 1930, this Japanese set pairs a shaped serving plate with six smaller plates. Floral bouquets decorate the creamy borders, with pink and purple flowers, little yellow accents and green foliage. The centres are left clear for the important business. We mean cake, obviously.

The backstamp reads Chikaramachi, Hand Painted. Its circa-1930 date places the service in the early Shōwa era, which began in 1926. Nearly a century later, these flowers are still dressed for company. We would not make them wait for a special occasion; an ordinary Tuesday has just as much potential for sponge cake.

This listing is for the cake set only: one large serving plate and six small plates. Matching breakfast plates, the teapot trio and the eight cup-and-saucer pairs from the same service are sold separately, not included here.

Maker's mark: Chikaramachi, Hand Painted

Origin: Japan

Date: circa 1930

Includes: one serving plate and six small plates

Serving plate: 23.5 x 24.5 cm

Small plates: 15.5 cm diameter

Sold as one complete seven-piece set

A pre-owned vintage set.
