In the 1890s, Europe was absolutely obsessed with Japan. Artists, designers, and glassmakers couldn't get enough of bamboo, cranes, and asymmetric compositions — and whoever made this jug was clearly paying attention. The result is one of the more quietly spectacular pieces of the Aesthetic Movement: a solid crystal water jug with a full wraparound engraving of bamboo shoots, rendered with the kind of delicate, naturalistic precision that makes you want to look at it from every angle.
The body is a generous cylindrical form that tapers slightly toward the base, sitting on a thick stepped foot with a subtle starburst cut underneath. The bamboo engraving covers the entire exterior — tall upright culms with diagonal leaf sprays branching outward, all wheel-engraved in a frosted matte finish that contrasts beautifully against the clear crystal. The handle is a solid applied crystal loop, and the pouring lip is a simple, elegant pinched spout.
This is the kind of piece that tells a story about a moment in history when the West looked East and made something genuinely beautiful as a result. It works equally well as a functional water jug or as a standalone display piece — though we'd recommend displaying it somewhere it can be properly admired.
