Two cherubs, several birds and an entirely unreasonable amount of ribbon. Whoever designed this plate clearly looked at an empty space and thought, “We could fit another wing in there.” Frankly, we like that level of commitment.
This Empire Works decorative plate dates to circa 1890 and features a pair of rosy little cherubs surrounded by flowers, fluttering birds and blue ribbons. They look terribly sweet, although we would not leave them unsupervised with the good scissors. Nobody gets that tangled in ribbon by accident.
A pale blue border with raised scrolling detail frames the scene. It is romantic, a little theatrical and absolutely not interested in your plans for a strictly minimalist room. We suggest letting it win this one. Your beige wall has had plenty of time to express itself.
At 22.5 cm across, it makes a charming addition to a living-room display or a bedroom wall. The back bears the Empire Works, Stoke-on-Trent, England mark, and a metal spring plate hanger is shown in the photographs. Have a look through all five images, including the close-ups and reverse, before choosing its new spot.
