Let's be honest: most tea cups are just vessels for hot liquid. This one is a tiny work of art that happens to also hold your tea. Big difference.
This delightful cup and saucer dates from around 1925 and comes from Japan, where they apparently couldn't make anything without making it beautiful. The warm peach lustre glaze catches the light like a sunset, while the hand-painted floral motif — featuring colourful berries and leaves in red, blue, yellow and green — gives it that cheerful, slightly folk-art energy that makes you smile every time you reach for it.
The scalloped rim on the cup adds a lovely decorative touch, and the gold-tinted handle is just the right amount of fancy without being over the top. These are the kind of cups that make afternoon tea feel like an occasion.
