There are decanters, and then there are decanters. This one is the latter. A late Victorian cut crystal decanter from around 1885, fitted with a solid silver collar at the neck — the kind of detail that separates a good piece from a great one, and a drawing room sideboard from a serious collection.

The body is a bold hexagonal form, wide at the shoulders and tapering dramatically toward the neck, giving it a silhouette that's immediately recognisable as high Victorian. The cutting is a confident two-zone composition: the upper shoulders are covered in hobnail/hobstar cuts that catch the light from every angle, while the lower body features long vertical pillar/mitre cuts that run from the shoulder down to the base. The base itself is cut with a radiating starburst pattern that glows through the crystal when backlit. The neck is fitted with its original solid silver collar — smooth and polished, bearing a partially worn hallmark with what appears to be a sword motif, consistent with Dutch silver assay marks — and the stopper is a large faceted oval crystal, beautifully proportioned and sitting perfectly in the neck.

This is the kind of piece that makes a whisky taste better just by being in the room. Whether you use it or display it, it commands attention.

WARNING: Pouring anything from this decanter will make it taste approximately 40% more sophisticated than it actually is.
