This is a pressed glass butter dome with matching plate, made in Bohemia or Germany in the 1930s, and it is the kind of object that makes a breakfast table look like it belongs in a country house rather than a Tuesday morning. Which is, frankly, an upgrade most Tuesday mornings desperately need.
The pattern is extraordinary in its ambition and density. The domed cover is covered from knob to base in a riot of pressed motifs — hobstars, fan cuts, daisy clusters, botanical leaves and flowers, all arranged in a geometric framework of triangular panels that somehow manages to be both busy and perfectly balanced. The matching plate below echoes the same vocabulary: a central Star of David-style geometric motif surrounded by alternating panels of fans, hobstars and stylised flora, all framed by a scalloped beaded rim that catches the light from every angle.
The faceted hexagonal knob on top is a small masterpiece of pressed glass design — six-sided, precisely formed, and satisfying to hold in a way that modern reproductions simply cannot replicate. At 1,395 grams combined, this is serious, substantial glass. It sits on a table with authority.
One small note on condition: there is a tiny rough patch on the rim of the plate — a minor manufacturing irregularity or very light flea bite, clearly visible in the close-up photograph. It does not affect the function or the overall appearance of the piece. Everything else is in excellent condition.
Dimensions: 22 x 13.5 cm
Weight: 1,395 grams (dome + plate)
Material: Pressed glass
Origin: Bohemia or Germany (Central Europe)
Style: Art Deco
Year: circa 1930s
Condition: Very good — minor rough patch on plate rim (see photo), no chips or cracks
Use it for butter, obviously. Or cheese. Or as a display piece under which you keep absolutely nothing, because the dome itself is the point.
WARNING: Placing this butter dome on a table will cause guests to pick it up, turn it over, hold it to the light, and ask where you found it. Budget approximately 10 minutes per guest for this interaction. Maison de L'oro considers this a feature of ownership, not an inconvenience. The dome disagrees with nothing.
