Chikaramachi Japanese Hand-Painted Cake Set, circa 1920

Someone in 1920s Japan clearly had opinions about how cake should be served. Not on just any old plate, mind you — on a proper handled serving platter with six matching side plates, all hand-painted with delicate blue botanical sprigs and finished with a fine gold rim. They were right, frankly. Cake deserves the effort.

This charming Chikaramachi cake set consists of one large oval serving platter with two elegant looped handles and six matching side plates, all decorated with the same graceful hand-painted blue grass or bamboo sprig motif on a soft cream-white ground. The gold rim runs neatly along the edge of each piece, giving the whole set a quietly refined look that somehow manages to make any cake look like it was made on purpose.

Marked on the base with the distinctive red Chikaramachi stamp under a domed crest — a well-known Japanese export mark from the early 20th century, made for the Western market. All seven pieces present and matching.
