Yes, it's an ashtray. Yes, it is absolutely beautiful. These two things are not mutually exclusive, and Dresden knew it. While the rest of the world was making ashtrays out of pressed glass and wishful thinking, someone in 1950s Germany decided that a cigarette rest deserved a hand-painted bouquet of roses, tulips, forget-me-nots and violets, a cobalt blue inner border with gold leaf accents, and a generously gilded scalloped rim. Priorities entirely in order.

This rectangular Dresden porcelain ashtray features two cigarette rests, a crisp white ground, and a central floral spray that looks like it escaped from a much more expensive cabinet. The gold scalloped outer rim and delicate blue line inner border frame the whole thing elegantly, and the underside carries the distinctive Dresden PP crown mark in cobalt blue — confirming this is proper German export porcelain from the post-war period.

Works equally well as an actual ashtray (if that's still your thing), a ring dish, a stationery tray, or simply a very pretty object on a shelf. No judgment here.
