French Distillery Jug – J. Jardinet, Bordeaux, c.1930

This is not just a jug. This is a jug that once held something considerably stronger than your morning coffee. Stamped on the base: "J. Jardinet, distillateur, Bordeaux — 50 Centilitres — Déposé" — a registered trademark from a Bordeaux distillery, produced to hold and serve their eau-de-vie, cognac, or armagnac. Somewhere in the Gironde, someone was pouring very good things from this very jug. Probably while wearing a beret.

The form is wonderfully architectural: a round-bellied body with a long elegant neck, a squared angular handle, and a cork stopper that still fits perfectly. The glaze is a rich, deep oxblood red — glossy and warm — covering the upper two-thirds of the piece, with the lower third left in unglazed cream stoneware. It's the kind of two-tone finish that looks effortlessly chic on a kitchen shelf, a bar cart, or a dining table.
