Handmade Greek Skyros Ceramic Bowl by K. Nikolaou — Hand-Painted Folk Art, 1970s

This bowl didn't come off a production line. It came from the hands of K. Nikolaou, a ceramicist on the Greek island of Skyros, who painted every single flower, leaf, and swirl on it by hand. And it shows — in the best possible way. The brushwork is confident and joyful, the colours are bold and unapologetic, and the whole thing has that wonderful quality of something made by someone who genuinely enjoyed making it.

Skyros has a long tradition of distinctive folk ceramics, and this bowl is a perfect example: a white ground covered in a riot of hand-painted flowers in red, pink, purple, orange, and yellow, with sweeping green acanthus leaves and a cheerful red-and-white dot border around the rim. The interior is just as beautifully decorated as the exterior — a swirling blue bird or wave motif at the centre surrounded by more flowers and foliage. It's the kind of bowl that makes you happy just looking at it.

The base is signed in black ink: "Handmade by K. Nikolaou, Skyros, Greece" with the artist's personal signature — making this a proper signed piece of Greek folk art, not a tourist trinket.
