The peacock is India's national bird, and this one is taking that responsibility very seriously. Standing on a small round base with its tail fanned out in full display, every single feather of that spectacular tail is engraved by hand — the eye motifs, the radiating barbs, the scalloped outer edge. The body is separately cast and attached, with a crest on the head and feet that grip the base with appropriate dignity. It is a brass peacock and it has absolutely no doubts about itself.

This type of engraved brass peacock figurine was produced in the Moradabad and Aligarh regions of Uttar Pradesh from the 1940s onwards, primarily for the export market — which means it was made to impress people who had never seen one before, and it succeeds at this completely. The patina is warm and genuine, with the kind of depth that comes from decades of existing in various interesting places.
