Italian Cobalt Blue Hexagonal Vase with Lid, Hand-Painted Pheasant & Peonies, Model A35, c.1950

Forty-one centimetres of Italian cobalt blue audacity, and it brought its lid.

This is not a vase that sits quietly in a corner hoping someone will notice it. This is a vase that walks into a room, puts its hexagonal foot down, and waits for the compliments to arrive — which they will, because it has earned them. The deep cobalt-to-black luster glaze shifts between midnight blue, teal, and forest green depending on the light, and against this backdrop an Italian ceramicist in the 1950s has hand-painted a full medallion scene: a pheasant in yellow, green, and white picking through a composition of pink peonies, cherry blossom, red berries, and assorted flora rendered with the kind of patient detail that makes you wonder if they had a deadline or just really loved birds.

The hexagonal form is architectural — six flat panels, each with its own painted vignette of flowers and foliage, separated by gold-accented ridges. The neck carries a smaller floral panel on each facet. The gold egg-shaped finial on the domed lid catches the light like a tiny sun. The top view of the lid reveals a perfect cobalt hexagon with a gold ring — the kind of detail that rewards people who look at things properly.

The base is impressed MADE IN ITALY / A35 — a model number that confirms this is a documented production piece rather than a one-off. The gold rim at the opening shows light wear consistent with 70+ years of existence, which we consider a character reference rather than a flaw.
