Italian Onyx Jewellery Box – Red Velvet Interior, Brass Fittings, 1960s

Some things age gracefully. This Italian onyx jewellery box is one of them. Made in Italy in the 1960s, it's carved from genuine green-grey onyx with the kind of swirling amber and cream veining that makes every surface look like a tiny landscape painting. The brass fittings — hinges, corner mounts and four small claw feet — give it a proper old-money feel, and the interior is lined in deep crimson velvet that has held up remarkably well for something that's been around for 60+ years.

It's heavy. Nearly a kilo of solid stone, which means it sits on your dressing table like it owns the place. Which, frankly, it does.

Full disclosure: the box has some corner damage — a few chips to the onyx edges and some wear to the brass at the corners, as visible in the photos. The damage is minor and largely hidden when the box is closed and displayed normally. The velvet interior is in good condition. This is a piece with character, not a piece pretending to be new.
