Meet the Clyde — the slightly larger, slightly rounder sibling of the Kendal, and just as charming. Same Fenton factory, same hand-painted flowers (this time a looser, more exuberant mix of pink and yellow blooms with feathery green sprigs), same bolbous panelled body on the teapot that looks like it was designed to be held with both hands on a cold morning. Which it was.
The Clyde pattern has a warmer, more informal feel than the Kendal — the flowers are bigger, the brushwork freer, the whole thing a little more come in, sit down, have a biscuit. The scalloped rim on the plates and saucers adds just enough elegance to keep things respectable.
This is a large set — a cake plate plus twelve side plates means this was clearly bought for a household that entertained seriously. The teapot is in excellent condition. The cups and a few other pieces show some light age-related discolouration on the interior — the kind that comes from 80+ years of sitting in a cupboard rather than from use. No chips, no cracks. The backstamp reads Jas. Broadhurst / Clyde / Made in England in the characteristic circular mark.
The complete set includes:
- Teapot with lid — 20 × 15 × 14 cm, 497 g — excellent condition
