Royal Grafton Malvern Fine Bone China Floral Trinket Tray – c.1950

If English bone china had a greatest hits album, Royal Grafton Malvern would be on it. This is a fine bone china trinket tray from circa the 1950s — a period when British potteries were producing some of their most confident, most beautiful work — and Malvern is a perfect example of why.

The decoration is a full wreath of summer florals that rings the entire tray: oversized blowsy pink peonies anchor the composition at four points, interspersed with soft blue anemones, delicate purple clematis, pale yellow buds and scattered berry sprigs in olive green. The flowers are abundant, layered and painted with real care. Between them, the inner rim carries a repeating Arabesque border in blue and gold — a geometric lattice of arches, diamonds and scrollwork that frames the whole arrangement with quiet architectural elegance. The outer scalloped rim is edged entirely in gold. The centre is left deliberately open and clean, a luminous ivory-white that lets the eye rest before returning to all that floral abundance.

At 12 cm across and 105 grams, it sits perfectly in the hand. The Royal Grafton crown mark with the Malvern pattern name is clearly printed on the base. Exactly as it should be.
