Before Gillette convinced the world that shaving was a disposable affair, Kampfe Brothers of New York were doing it properly. The Star Safety Razor — winner of the Highest Award at the Paris Exposition of 1900, no less — was the gentleman's weapon of choice for a close shave without the drama of a straight razor and a nervous barber.

This example is a beauty. The handle is covered top to bottom in a dense geometric knurl pattern — interlocking chain-link ovals and diamond crosshatch — the kind of surface detail that takes real tooling time and makes modern razors look embarrassingly lazy. The head is stamped STAR / Made in U.S.A. on the guard plate, and the blade-loading mechanism opens cleanly to reveal the original blade still in place (not for use, obviously — it's been there since roughly the time the Titanic was news).

The silver-toned finish has developed a warm, uneven patina that only 100+ years of bathroom shelf life can produce. The mechanism still works. The knurl still grips. The whole thing still looks considerably better than whatever plastic thing is currently in your shower.

  • Star Safety Razor by Kampfe Bros., New York, c.1900–1920
  • Silver-toned metal with all-over geometric knurl handle
  • STAR / Made in U.S.A. stamped on guard plate
  • Flip-open blade loading mechanism, functional
  • Original blade present (decorative only)
  • Good condition — patina and minor surface wear consistent with age
  • 9 × 4 cm, 67 g
  • USA, c.1900–1920

WARNING: Using this razor will not make you shave better. It will, however, make your bathroom shelf look like it belongs in a gentlemen's club circa 1910. We consider this a net positive.
