Eight cups and eight matching saucers. Enough for a proper gathering, or one person who is spectacularly committed to not washing up between cups of tea. We are not here to judge your household systems.

This Japanese Chikaramachi set dates to circa 1930 and features floral bouquets around creamy exteriors, white interiors and gently shaped saucers. Pink, purple and yellow flowers mingle with green foliage, while curved handles give the cups a lovely little flourish. Apparently even holding tea required a bit of theatre. We approve.

The matching service bears the Chikaramachi, Hand Painted backstamp. Its circa-1930 date places it in the interwar period. We cannot tell you the conversations these cups have overheard, but we rather enjoy the idea of giving tableware from that time a new chapter. Preferably one involving decent biscuits and nobody checking their phone every thirty seconds.

All eight cup-and-saucer pairs are sold together, so there is no choosing favourites at checkout. Arrange them on a kitchen dresser or gather them around the table. They have already done the matching for you; the guests can sort out their own seating arrangements.
