Some bowls are subtle. This is not one of them. This 1930s cut crystal bowl has the kind of structured, layered cutting that makes you want to pick it up and turn it slowly in the light — which, at 1.6 kilos of solid lead crystal, is a two-handed operation. Worth it every time.

The design is built around three distinct horizontal bands that wrap the entire exterior: a wide central band of dense diamond hobnail cutting, flanked above and below by bands of elegant tulip motifs — each one a graceful pointed arch with a delicate leaf cut inside. The rim is finished with a row of fine vertical cuts, and the base reveals a spectacular sunburst starburst pattern radiating from the centre, surrounded by a ring of pointed oval cuts. Look through the bottom and you get a kaleidoscope of intersecting cuts that would make a 1930s glassmaker very proud indeed.

Solid, heavy, and beautifully proportioned — this is the kind of bowl that anchors a dining table or a living room sideboard with quiet authority. No fuss, just 90 years of excellent taste.
