Vintage Karlsbad Cobalt Blue & Gold Plate, 28 cm | c. 1945–1950

Some plates quietly mind their own business. This one has invited an entire cast of beautifully dressed romantics over and given them a cobalt-blue ballroom. Subtle? Absolutely not. And we rather love it for that.

Dating from around 1945–1950, this Karlsbad plate combines a rich blue centre with gold-coloured floral flourishes and a border of romantic courting scenes. There are pink dresses, garden encounters and considerably more effort put into getting dressed than most of us manage on a Tuesday.

At 28 cm across, it makes a lovely statement on a dining-room dresser or display shelf. Simply prop it up and let the tiny painted guests provide the entertainment. Unlike actual dinner guests, they won’t complain about the seating plan.
